Rabino y novelista estadounidense. Hijo de inmigrantes polacos, creció en una casa judía ortodoxa y fue ordenado rabino conservador. Se dedicó a la enseñanza hasta que comenzó, en la década de 1960, una carrera de editor y escritor de artículos y reseñas académicas y populares. Sus novelas Los elegidos (1967; versión cinematográfica 1981), La promesa (1969) y Mi nombre es Asher Lev (1972) han introducido en la narrativa estadounidense la vida espiritual y cultural de los judíos ortodoxos. En 2001 aparecieron tres novelas breves interconectadas con el título Old Men at Midnight [Viejos a medianoche]. Entre las obras no narrativas de Potok se destacan Wanderings: Chaim Potok's History of the Jews [Errancias. La historia de los judíos por Chaim Potok] (1978), en la que el autor narra con una impresionante erudición y dramatismo la historia de su pueblo, y The Gates of November [Las puertas de noviembre] (1996), la crónica de una familia judía soviética y de la grandeza y la caída de la Unión Soviética.
